A text message is billed in segments. A short plain text is one segment. A long one, or one with certain special characters, can be two or three. Both sent and received messages count.

A one-truck handyman doing 20 jobs a week with night-before, on-the-way and arrived texts, plus some back-and-forth, might use a few hundred segments a month. A three-van company uses more.
